East-West Element Mapping
How Mystica maps a Western sun sign's element (fire, earth, air, water) onto the five-element system so it can be read against a Chinese zodiac animal.

What it is
Western astrology groups its twelve signs into four elements — fire (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius), earth (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn), air (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius), water (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces). East Asian metaphysics uses five: wood, fire, earth, metal, water (see five elements). Three names overlap directly — fire, earth, and water mean the same thing in both systems. The mismatch is air, which has no five-element equivalent on its own, and metal, which has no Western equivalent at all.
Mystica's East-West reading resolves the first half of that mismatch by mapping Western air onto wood: both represent motion, spring, and outward growth rather than a physical substance, which is the closest conceptual match available. It does not invent a Western equivalent for metal — for a metal-element animal (monkey or rooster), the reading adds this line verbatim: "Metal has no counterpart in Western astrology, so a birth chart alone never describes this part of you." That is a real gap between the two systems, not something a mapping can paper over.
Worked example
A Libra (Western air) reading against a Rooster (fixed element: metal) is read as: Libra's element maps to wood, and wood is overcome by metal (see generating & overcoming cycles) — a restraining relationship, not a generating one, computed the same way as any other wood-versus-metal pairing.
How Mystica computes it
Mystica's East-West engine performs this mapping deterministically for every one of the 12 signs × 12 animals = 144 combinations per locale, and is tested to guarantee that each element pair resolves to exactly one of the four possible relationships — never zero, never more than one.
