Generating & Overcoming Cycles

相生 (generating) and 相剋 (overcoming) are the two fixed loops that connect the five elements — the logic behind Mystica's East-West reading.

What it is

The five elements are connected by two fixed cycles, not a free-for-all of relationships. The generating cycle (相生, sangsaeng) runs wood → fire → earth → metal → water → wood: each element feeds the next, the way wood fuels fire, fire's ash becomes earth, earth seams hold metal, metal condenses to water (in classical cosmology, not literal chemistry), and water nourishes wood. The overcoming cycle (相剋, sanggeuk) runs wood → earth → water → fire → metal → wood: each element restrains a different one, the way wood roots break up earth, earth dams water, water extinguishes fire, fire melts metal, and metal chops wood.

Because these two cycles are total and exclusive, any two different elements have exactly one of four possible relationships: one generates the other, or the other generates it, or one overcomes the other, or the other overcomes it. There is no fifth option and no case where two different elements have no relationship at all.

Worked example

Fire and Wood: wood generates fire, so a Wood-element person reading against a Fire-element counterpart sees a "generating" relationship — traditionally read as supportive, feeding energy in one direction. Fire and Metal: fire overcomes metal (melts it), so that pairing reads as a restraining relationship instead — traditionally read as friction or a check on excess.

How Mystica uses this

East-West maps a Western sun sign's element (fire, earth, air, or water) into this five-element system — air becomes wood, since wind, spring, and outward growth occupy the same conceptual territory — and then reads the sign's element against a Chinese zodiac animal's fixed element through exactly one of these four relationships. Metal has no Western counterpart, which the reading says outright rather than forcing a match.
